Always remember your computer is a tool, use it to get what YOU want out of it. We all have different use's for them and may not want the same things ! Know your limits and take your time, computers are fun and are not supposed to be taxing or frustrating, after all they were invented to make life easier.
We'll start with a few simple mouse and keyboard tips, as we come accross many walks of life in this job and often find people missing some very basic skills.
THE POWER OF THE RIGHT CLICK
We all know and use our left click on the mouse, but did you know how powerfull your right click is ? Try it, when you click on various shortcuts, files or links this gives you vital access to alternate menu's. You'll be surprised at what you can do with the right click on the mouse so try it on everything !
SIMPLE KEYBOARD TIPS
Quite often we are required to select more than one item to send via email or print at once, or even delete. This doesn't have to be hard and applies to most programs. When using your mouse (left click) to select items (files, addresses, pictures ect) try holding the "Ctrl" to select more than one object at a time. Alternatively you can select the 1st object then hold down shift then select the last object - this is similar to holding down "Alt+A" (which selects all), but gives you the choice via your mouse to choose the start and end point. From here you can combine the two and deselect objects by holding down "Ctrl" and left click selected items to de-select !
KEEPING YOUR IMPORTANT FILES BACKED UP
When working on large documents, or anything thats time intensive, save your work OFTEN. Even better save it in stages - this way you will be able to restore the document back to a point if anything goes wrong. Also if it's important, save it on multiple medias. If your at home email it to work or vice versa, keep a copy on CD or a USB flash drive. There's nothing worse than losing work thats taken you hours to complete - REMEMBER TO BACKUP OFTEN ! (For backup solutions come in and talk to us instore or give us a call !)
POWER FLUCTUATIONS = NOT GOOD FOR YOUR PC
Electricity is never guaranteed, as many variable including mother nature can effect our power supply. Invest in a Uninterupted Power Supply (UPS) These devices not only save you from surges they also allow you to continue working when the power goes off (for a limited time). In some cases it's the lack of voltage and not a surge that can be detrimental to your PC, In theses cases a UPS can often lengthen the life of your computer (So come in and check out our UPS range)
SAVE YOURSELF FROM DAMAGING YOUR PC
Avoid connecting equipment (except USB devices) to your computer or laptop unless completely off. In most cases your computer requires to detect equipment on the startup process and will not function correctly if installed while your machine is running. There are also many peripherals that can cause damage to your machine if not installed correctly. Check the installation instructions before installing ANY new device.
